I believe we have the powders we need already available. Working together with current resources I do not see this as being a difficult thing to do. Maybe even get a bullet & powder company to be a part of it. I think there is plenty of room ($$) for the suppressor companies to work with Lyman to publish a subsonic reloading manual. So this data is close to what we are looking for.

W/O one over 1100-1200 fps is pushing it. Lead bullets like speeds under 2000 with a gas check. We are lucky we have the cast bullet data since we really don't have any other source for reduced loads. In the search for the subsonic and cat sneeze loads things like sealing the chamber, getting enough pressure for the powder to burn correctly, and to get the bullet to always exit the barrel, were more of an issue than detonation. in the 308 I even see 14 gr of Unique in the 300 H+H Mag, and 9.5 gr of 700x in the 30-06 as "starting loads." Hi-Skor 700x, PB, SR7625 and Unique in the older listings go down to 8-10 gr. This phenomenon of reduced loads having a tendency to detonate was not discussed like it is today.

In the older manuals lots of talk about fillers. Lighter charges can sometimes result in dangerously high pressure." "Never go below the starting charge as to do so can sometimes cause dangerous conditions. Yet evidence does exist that under certain conditions reduced loads can jump pressures enormously" This Phenomenon, popularly termed "detonation", has never been satisfactorily explained. "Under certain Conditions loads can also cause trouble. I see not reference to the 40% load density or secondary explosion effect. I wish we had more info in the new manuals in a remarks field. ball cellar and small game load No 31358 may be substituted" 002" (for a load that is listed as well over MAX for the 44 Spl. Hard crimp and bullet not over size more than. The early ones don't even have that, just a range of loads with a wonderful "Remarks" section with excellent things like: 38 -> the Lyman 48th Edition and have used the data from all of them and have *only* seen "Sugg Starting Grains" " The "no lower than" charge insures that you don't go lower than 40% density to avoid "secondary explosion effect"."įirst off where is the "No Lower than" charge weight? Winchester is supposedly coming out with a new shotgun powder made specially for SUBSONIC SHOTSHELLS, it may be bulky enough and have a burning rate similar to the above powders. Hodgdon International- 11 grains- 9 grains The "no lower than" charge insures that you don't go lower than 40% density to avoid "secondary explosion effect".Īlliant American Select- 11 grains- 9 grains Please note I HAVE NOT TRIED ANY OF THESE LOADS YET. All of these powders should be safe with a 180 grain bullet seated to the canalure. Based on the loads for cast bullets (all shotgun/pistol powders) and selecting powders with similar burning rates and low volumetric densities, I've come up with the following powders. I've been looking at doing some experements also, especially after I looked at the Lyman Cast Bullet Manual. filling the case to the bottom of the neck holds 5.7gr of Red Dot with bullet seated you have room for 4.7 grains of Red Dot)Ĭase-Remington with primer hole drilled out.Įach of 7 rounds weighed in grains loaded, velocity in FPS, FAL with or without can, overall lengthīullet Weight (Gr.)
